A HUGE thank you to Reigate College for their fundraising!

Tuesday, May 25th, 2021

We were so excited to learn that the upper 6th at Reigate College had chosen Relate Mid and East Surrey as the focus of their fundraising this year.  We have had a long association with the college having had Young People Counsellors in the school weekly since 2007. As well as providing a confidential space to talk, we also run in-house courses on a variety of topics such as anger and anxiety.

Jo Driscoll, Director of Health & Wellbeing at Reigate College said “Relate Mid-Surrey really do provide a backbone of support to our students, throughout the pandemic the support was vital to ensure our students have access to counselling. At the college we are delighted to have Relate here to offer counselling and guidance to our young people. The students chose this charity as Relate have been our counselling service at the college for many years and have provided excellent support for students throughout the pandemic so they wanted to support them to boost them and increase any help with finances.

The school held a well-being raffle with prizes for the winners and students could enter a media or poetry competition. Some tutor groups also organised quizzes. The college promoted events in tutorials alongside positive mental health techniques.

Charities have suffered financially over the last year and we are no exception. When we had to suddenly close our centres and our charity shop and the schools closed we had to quickly find a new way of supporting our clients,” explained Abi Stokes, Chief Operating Officer, Relate Mid-Surrey, But our staff were determined and we quickly moved our counselling services over to Zoom and telephone. As a result we have managed to continue to support young people over this challenging year.  The money raised by Reigate College will go a long way to helping this work continue in our local area but the boost it has given to our staff after a difficult year is invaluable. The positive messages about the impact of our work that the college shared during the campaign and on social media were really special.

The college managed to raise a whopping £600 which is great work and we would like to heartily thank everyone involved.

Relate Mid-Surrey have specialist Young People counsellors placed in a number of local schools and colleges, and also at our Epsom, Reigate and Dorking centres or via telephone or Zoom sessions. We will give the final word to the winning poem from Wendy at Reigate College

Relate

Families come, in all shapes and sizes.

Some loving, some harmful when a problem arises

Humans to thrive, need the bond of connection.

Relate, the charity, listens and allows reflection.

They educate and guide with amazing skill.

Like the hope of Spring in the first daffodil.

To share with a counsellor brings wellbeing and calm

When another has cause to much agitation and harm

At Reigate college we welcome Relate

We want all our students to fulfil their fate

To be content in themselves, so that radiates out

To succeed, be happy and to live without doubt
